Tips For Handling A Flat Tire Emergency The Right Way
1. Preparation and Location: The first step to changing a flat tire is ensuring. Engage your emergency brake, turn on your hazard lights, and if you have them, use your car’s wheel wedges to prevent your vehicle from rolling.
2. Locate Your Tools: Your vehicle should have a jack, a lug wrench, and a spare tire. They are usually found under the floor mat in the trunk or a compartment close to the trunk’s opening. Before you need them, familiarize yourself with where they’re stored.
3. Loosen the Lug Nuts: Before you jack up the car, loosen the lug nuts on the affected tire. While the vehicle is on the ground, turn them counterclockwise until they come loose (but do not remove them completely).
4. Raise the Car: Consult your car’s manual for the proper jack placement. Raise the vehicle until the flat tire is off the ground, but no more than 6 inches.
5. Remove the Flat Tire: Remove the lug nuts once the car is raised and pull the flat tire off the wheelbase. Keep the lug nuts in a safe place for later.\
6. Install the Spare Tire: Align the spare tire with the lug nut posts. Push the tire on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
7. Lower the Car and Secure the Nuts: Lower the car to the ground. Use the wrench to tighten all lug nuts securely
